Farmville Public Library Families & the ABCs of Active Reading

Thanks to an invitation from Children’s Librarian, Heather Harden, Dr. Terry Atkinson shared a read aloud with children and families at Farmville Public Library’s Storytime on June 23, 2021. In preparation for an upcoming program with the North Carolina Aquarium, the storytime included songs, fingerplays, books, and stories featuring fish and sea creatures. Dr. Atkinson shared the book, Mr. Seahorse by Eric Carle, and modeled the ABCs of Active Reading approach with children in the audience who listened to the story and engaged in Asking/Answering Questions, Building vocabulary, and Connecting with a child’s real world experiences. Parents and caregivers left with a handout illustrating the ABCs of Active Reading model and a greater understanding of how picture books serve as tools for brain and language development. Storytime for children of all ages takes place every Wednesday at 10am in the Farmville Public Library’s Auditorium located at 4276 W. Church Street, Farmville, NC. Farmville Public Library serves all of Pitt County children and families and has been an active supporter of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and READ ENC Community Literacy Coalition.
